Cambodia

Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia, is a country in Mainland Southeast Asia. Cambodia borders Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, and has a coastline along the Gulf of Thailand. Cambodia spans about 69, 898 square miles, which is approximately the same size as Missouri. Phnom Penh is the capital of Cambodia with 2.5 million people living within the city (2023).
Cambodia is considered a constitutional monarchy, consisting of a King and a Prime Minister; with the Prime Minister being the primary decision maker.

Cambodia gained independence during the Second World War in 1953. However, the Vietnam War extended into Cambodia, via the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the Sihanouk Trail in 1965. In 1970 a coup installed a US-aligned Khmer Republic, which was overthrown in 1975 by the Khmer Rouge, and the Khmer Rouge ruled the country and carried out the Cambodian Genocide from 1975-1979, when they were ousted in the Cambodian-Vietnam War. The Vietnamese-occupied People’s Republic of Kampuchea became the de facto government.

A 1991 Paris Peace Accord ended the war with Vietnam, and Cambodia was governed by a United Nations Mission from 1992-1993. After the 1993 Cambodian General Election, the UN withdrew. The 1997 coup d’etat consolidated power under Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). While constitutionally a multi-party state, the main opposition party was dissolved by the dominant party the CPPin 2017, now making Cambodia a de facto  one-party state. The UN designates Cambodia a least developed country (exhibits indicators of  the lowest socioeconomic development).

Prime Minister Hun Sen served as the Prime Minister of Cambodia for 38 years. In the 2023 General Election, Prime Minister Hun Sen was re-elected. Six days later, he resigned as Prime Minister. However prior to his resignation, he handed power over to his son Hun Manet. Hun Sen currently serves as the President of the Senate in Cambodia.
